You may have seen the news circulating about a generous donation from the Wireless Zone Foundation of Giving that we shared last #FoodCenterFriday. Their help really made this day possible! Here are more photos of that day getting food out to folks out in Dexter at the first ever, local Food Mobile!
Covid-19 has made getting food on the table especially tough. Thanks to their donation we've been able to fast-track the purchase of a refrigerated box truck that was used on July 1st at the first-ever Mobile Food Pantry Distribution event. This box truck will allow for much more of these events throughout Piscataquis County.
3000 pounds of food was distributed last week to 125 individuals! This truck, as well as a van, is being used to reach homebound seniors delivering locally grown produce and commodity food boxes. Later this year, pallets of food will be able to make their way from the Good Shepherd Food Bank back to Piscataquis county making, our impact that much greater and more efficient. With the support from this grant, the cost of these distributions will be covered for the rest of the year AND we'll be able to procure more food to deliver to the folks in need who live in more remote areas of our region.

My office view and sounds are unique today. This is the third or fourth week I've been in this space since Covid19 ushered everyone to work remotely. On many levels, our distribution operations are running "normally". The "normal" includes all pre-boxed food, lots of masks and gloves in the mix and keeping in mind that most of our community-based, group intensive programs like Garden in a Box and Cooking for Spice Drive have been paused... The work is getting done, and the food is definitely still moving. However, on several levels, this still feels surreal.
I am sitting in a newly painted office at a folding table, admiring the new blue hue painted by friends of the Food Center. The white-board calendar listing our distributions and deliveries is propped up on a chair, and a projector is in place of the coat rack that used to be there. This is very clearly a space that's in transition. Very clearly, we are all operating under the swells and heaves of transition amid this pandemic. Yet there are signs of this work also feeling...normal. Even though the calendar is perched on a chair, not yet hung, it's filled out until October. Even though I check the voicemail from my cellphone, I still receive and follow through with messages. Even though I'm usually here alone, we still Covid19-style-greet the occasional neighbor seeking food assistance when they happen to stop by.
When I began writing this last week, it was the first morning we had our new FarmShare for Homebound Seniors assistant Monica in, and our long-time volunteer Roxy.
Roxy was situated in Erin's unfurnished office with another folding table. Monica sat at the farthest end of the room. We quickly realized that calling our seniors, some of whom are hard of hearing, wouldn't work while wearing masks. A realization that is so very novel, like much of what is being adjusted and learned about during this pandemic.
It became very clear that masks wouldn't work when one senior repeatedly asked me if I was selling seat covers while I tried to communicate the prices of cucumbers! So, we adjusted. Roxy and Monica moved into separate rooms. I kept my mask on and continued my work.
From where I was situated, I could hear Roxy's infectious laugh as she re-connected with seniors she hadn't spoken to since last season. Monica deftly updated our brand new (and a little beta) Database so the farm produce inventory would be accurate.
"Some of the ladies remembered me! " I could hear Roxy exclaim.
Some things haven't change, even as each of us tries to understand how to do what is needed. Human connection, though formed now more than ever over the phone or computer, still exists.
We'll be sharing more about our new database, developed by Steve, in the coming weeks. It's truly a wonderful tool, even with the tweaks and bumps to smooth out. It serves as a micro-reminder of the macro-theme I've noticed during this pandemic; how to change and adjust accordingly to new information, new situations and very, very unexpected obstacles. Challenges for sure. But I think that resilience is the force that stems from the friction of challenge. I have to believe community builds together when we can support one another navigating new and unexpected difficulties.
When I next write a reflective #FoodCenterFriday I hope to share even more progress on the other side of what can feel challenging.
Until next time,
Merrilee

The #'s from the 9/16 Special Food Distribution are in! We're ever grateful for the opportunity and ability to serve our communities in this way. PRFC was able to move remaining food boxes out to surrounding food cupboards in Milo, Greenville, Dover-Foxcroft, Corinna, Dexter, and the Northern Light Mayo Hospital. Thanks to our partners at Good Shepherd Foodbank, our comrades in the regional food cupboards, Jordan Farm, our wonderful team of volunteers and the community spirit of mutual aid. #FoodCenterFriday #WeGetFoodMoving #CommunityPartners #MutualAid #FeedingMaine #MaineFoodScapes

However on this day, the trucker said he had to be at the Canadian border by 2:15. There was no way he'd be able to wait. The PRFC team was ever-grateful for the show of volunteers that were able to pack produce on-site. Rod's word for the distribution? "Non-stop."

Volunteers Helping with Food Distribution
Description
An account of the resource
November 24th, 2020. Pictured: a handful of the 21 volunteers that helped the Special Food Distribution Ship run so smoothly that day. We were able to distribute food to 603 households. That's about 1,654 people. It was definitely cold that day, but there were laughs with each-other and folks coming through the line, and hand warmers to keep the spirits up! Community support efforts are integral, particularly in times of need. We are so grateful. May everyone have a safe weekend, and don't forget to laugh!

If I could, I would send Barbara an e mail telling her about our annual fundraiser, re-tooled from April’s abandoned “Soupstock” into August’s ice cream and auction event, “Scoopstock”. Thanks to the imagination and good will of our fundraising co-chairs, Theresa Boettner and Nancy Lappert, and the cooperation of an army of artisans and volunteers, we managed to salvage the event by hosting it outdoors and with pandemic-savvy protocols.

I would tell Barb that, yes, we are in good shape to sustain the food cupboard for some time into the future. And yes, the event was so much more than that. I think she would have noticed it all: the artistic energy embedded in the hand- made ice cream bowls and auction items; the imagination, resilience, and creativity of the organizers, cooks, musicians and builders; the strong backs of the setters-up, mask-enforcers, guides, and volunteers; the anxious wee-hours worrying; the generosity of our guests.

As important as the fun and the funds we raised are, we are ever conscious of Barb’s dedication to the purpose of our food pantry. Our patrons have been stripped of a little more dignity, with little choice of what might appear in the pre-packaged food parcels they receive, asked to mask up despite respiratory ill health, marginal access to health care and decent housing, they arrive with their neighbors, wait in their cars, deliver food to friends who can’t make it, tell corny jokes. They thank us and hope we stay well. Amazing grace.
