Hometown Holidays is fast approaching, and Piscataquis County WILL safely celebrate the wonderful Christmas season. 2020 has been a tough year for all of us, but especially for our children. It's time to usher in some holiday cheer! Let's bring back the joy in every child's eyes by participating.
Here are some ways you can get involved:
Submit your county-wide events here!
Piscataquis County tree-lightings, Santa-sightings, holiday sales, decorating contests and parades; whatever the event, SUBMIT it to the chamber and it will be promoted far and wide!
Click on the button below to get on the schedule!
Mitten Drive
The chamber will be collecting hand-knitted mittens to be distributed to children who need them at the Dover-Foxcroft Tree Lighting. To donate, drop mittens into the collection boxes located at Rowell's Garage, Will's Shop 'n Save, and the Chamber from Nov 10-27th.
Holiday Chamber Bucks
The chamber offers gift certificates year-round in $10 or $20 denominations, accepted at businesses throughout Piscataquis County, which helps us keep those dollars local. This holiday season, you can sponsor a needy Piscataquis family by purchasing chamber bucks which will be distributed prior to Christmas. Click here for more information.
NEW this year, the Holiday Lights Driving Tour allows for social distancing while providing families some quality time in their vehicles as they follow a map through individual communities to see decorated homes and businesses. To get on the map, click HERE.
Dover-Foxcroft Festival of Lights Parade Float Application
CLICK HERE to Register a FLOAT in the Dover-Foxcroft HomeTown Holidays Parade!
For a printable parade application form, click HERE.
The Festival of Lights Parade is on December 5th.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will depart from FA at 5pm, head down W. Main St. and stop at the Dover-Foxcroft Fire Station where Santa will light up the Christmas Tree.
Covid-19-Safe!
Things will be a little different this year; we won't be gathering inside the fire station and children won't be able to sit on Santa's lap. However, Santa will be able to speak to the children and receive their wish lists (see below) in a very unique way. We do have to keep Santa and Mrs. Claus safe!
We are asking local businesses to decorate their vehicles, trucks, trailers, etc. to make the parade bright and exciting for the kids in our community. Let's end 2020 on a festive note!
Printable wish-lists for SANTA

The GHS Harvest Fair returns!

While our lives have changed dramatically during the past six months or so and many folks are still self-quarantining or at least have remained cooped up for far too long, the Guilford Historical Society has planned to hold their annual event to break the monotony! As all activities are to be held out of doors, we feel a safe gathering time can be enjoyed by all. We will have masks and sanitizer available, the servers at the hot dog and popcorn stands will be masked and gloved, and the Bounce House will be continually re-sanitized with limited numbers at one time.

Get out of the house and come have some fun!!

The Cemetery Tour will be held at the Lawn Section Cemetery on the left side of Route 15 (Elm Street) heading west and will include the mystery of the lost cremains!

Thanks to the Red Maple Inn for providing the Bounce House and to the Town of Guilford for providing the masks and sanitizer!

The Center Theatre and Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce in Dover-Foxcroft have announced that the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival will not be taking place as planned on October 3rd. Instead, the Festival is being envisioned as a month-long virtual celebration dubbed ‘WHOOPtoberfest’ featuring a new portal on MaineWhoopiePieFestival.com. The portal will let visitors receive real-time directions to the nearest whoopie pie bakers and vendors to ensure easy access to Maine’s Official State Treat. Members of the WHOOPtoberfest portal will be able to vote for their favorite bakers, upload images of their favorite whoopie pie moments, and earn badges and prizes as true fans of the Maine Whoopie Pie.

“We’re very disappointed that we can’t have the festival as planned,” Said Patrick Myers, the Executive Director of the Center Theatre and lead organizer of the Festival, ‘But there is no way to safely bring 7,000 people from around New England to central Maine this fall. However, we do not want 2020 to be known as ‘The Year Without Whoopie’ so we’re excited to host a month-long celebration of our state’s whoopie pie bakers, vendors, and supporters.” The WHOOPtoberfest portal is in development, but Myers said he plans to start working with the state’s bakers and festival sponsors to create promotions and special offers that will roll out throughout the month of October.

The Maine Whoopie Pie Festival began 11 years ago and has grown to be the largest one-day event in Piscataquis County. Denise Buzzelli, the Executive Director of the Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce, has been a collaborator on the festival for most of its existence. “The Whoopie Pie Festival is a huge boost to our local economy,” Buzzelli said, “Losing the in-person festival will affect many of our local businesses and organizations, but we hope that WHOOPtoberfest will keep the spirit of the festival alive until we can come together again in 2021.”

The Maine Whoopie Pie Festival is a collaboration between the Center Theatre, Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce, and many other businesses and organizations including the Festival’s Lead sponsor Shaw’s Supermarket, and other sponsors: Consolidated Communications, Dave’s World, the Eastern Gazette, Maine’s Credit Unions, Townsquare Media, and the Varney Agency. For more information on the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival, visit www.MaineWhoopiePieFestival.com, call the Center Theatre at (207)564-8943, or email whoopiepie@centertheatre.org. The Maine Whoopie Pie Festival is the largest annual fundraiser for the Center Theatre for the Performing Arts and supports their mission to make arts, education, and entertainment accessible to our rural communities to engage and inspire.

Volunteers Helping with Food Distribution
Description
An account of the resource
November 24th, 2020. Pictured: a handful of the 21 volunteers that helped the Special Food Distribution Ship run so smoothly that day. We were able to distribute food to 603 households. That's about 1,654 people. It was definitely cold that day, but there were laughs with each-other and folks coming through the line, and hand warmers to keep the spirits up! Community support efforts are integral, particularly in times of need. We are so grateful. May everyone have a safe weekend, and don't forget to laugh!
