Town of Dover-Foxcroft
Important Information about Voting
State of Maine General Presidential Election
Tuesday, November 3, 2020

The State of Maine General Presidential Election is Tuesday, November 3, 2020. For Dover-Foxcroft voters, in-person voting will take place on November 3rd at the Dover-Foxcroft Municipal Building Gymnasium located at 48 Morton Ave., Dover-Foxcroft. Polling hours are from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm.

Both in-person and absentee voting are available for the November 3rd Election. Voters may cast an absentee ballot instead of voting in person to minimize interaction with others during this public health pandemic (COVID-19). Casting an absentee ballot is convenient and secure.

Absentee ballot requests are being accepted right now. Printed ballots will be available by early October, and we will issue your ballot as soon as possible after that date. We check all absentee ballot requests against the voter registration list to ensure that only one absentee ballot is issued to each voter.

These are the options available to you for voting by absentee ballot:

You can vote absentee in the town office. Office hours are: Mon., Thurs., and Fri. - 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Wed. - 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

If you'd like to take an absentee ballot out of the office, a request form must first be completed. Ballots can be returned in person or by mail to: Dover-Foxcroft Town Office, 48 Morton Ave. Suite A, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426. Postage will be pre-paid to return your absentee ballot. We have a drop box on the outside of the municipal building by the fron tentrance specifically for dropping off Dover-Foxcroft Absentee ballots only. The box is secure and can only be opened by a municipal clerk. You can leave your ballot in the drop box right up until the polls close at 8PM on Election Day.

You can make a telephone request for your own ballot to be mailed to the address you provide to the clerk. Call (207) 564-3318 To complete your application over the phone, we must speak to you directly. Voicemail requests will not be accepted. If we are not available to take your call, leave us a message and we will call you back.

You can request an absentee ballot online using the Secretary of State's web link: https://apps.web.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/AbsenteeBallot/index.pl

The statewide deadline to request an absentee ballot is by 4pm on Thursday, October 29, 2020. Please request and return your ballot early enough to allow for postal mail delivery time. Ballots must be returned to the municipal clerk by 8:00 PM on November 3rd Election Day.

Important, You must sign your name on the designated line on the back of your absentee ballot envelope.

You may register to vote at the town office or on Election Day at the polls. Please bring photo ID and proof of address. If you are already registered to vote, you do not need to present ID to cast your ballot.

We would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the election or voter registration. To reach the Town of Dover-Foxcroft Municipal Office, call (207) 564.3318. For more information on the upcoming election, visit our website: www.dover-foxcroft.org.

Your VOTE is your VOICE! W O R K I N G I R L. Naturally dyed turmeric shirt bleeds and blends crimson when mixed with the salt of sweat. I can't help but delight. How absurd! The playground on outer Bangor is wrapped in caution tape. Face masks hang from mirrors like fuzzy dice. How very absurd. Surrendering to this reality. Surreal. I deeply sigh at myself as I wonder how long the kettle has actually been boiling. How long have I been sitting without really breathing? Did I remember the gloves and Lysol? Am I standing six feet apart? I marvel at the light dancing on the Piscataquis River. I continue to collect treasures washed up on the banks. Seeking solace. But am I remembering we're in a pandemic? Am I integrating it all? I do and I am. Pit stains for souvenirs of my movement in life. Holding that lightly, experimenting, playing. Sweating and noticing. Advocating and pushing the fabric of the universe around until Community comes home and says Damn babe you really spruced it up nice in here. Community sets it's luggage down and flops onto the couch and says I think we can ALL finally breathe. Welcome Home.

Working Girl
Description
An account of the resource
This poem corresponds to a moment where I realized that I was sweating crimson when working and wearing a naturally dyed turmeric shirt. We were a month or so into the pandemic and the metaphors and symbols were too good not to acknowledge. It was just after I had taken the first drive out of Dover-Foxcroft and had been noticing multiple playgrounds with caution tape, many electronic school and business signs encouraging people to be kind, read, that we are all in this together. Although I felt surreal, looking back on that beginning time, it felt like there was more togetherness and unification than there was disparate, political divide like there is currently (September 2020).

Volunteers Helping with Food Distribution
Description
An account of the resource
November 24th, 2020. Pictured: a handful of the 21 volunteers that helped the Special Food Distribution Ship run so smoothly that day. We were able to distribute food to 603 households. That's about 1,654 people. It was definitely cold that day, but there were laughs with each-other and folks coming through the line, and hand warmers to keep the spirits up! Community support efforts are integral, particularly in times of need. We are so grateful. May everyone have a safe weekend, and don't forget to laugh!

What has transpired is transpiring.

A virus sweeps like the loose winds dance on these candles. Like the breeze that bends the oak, moves the grasses, sheds the seed. Like the water that runs flames from fracking. Like the hands that deftly kill. Like the tears of mother's torn from children. Like the arc of bomb to target, a geometry of power. Like the friction between rope and limb as a noose slides on bark and neck. Like the saliva that trickles dry as the chorus of calling out all the names needing to be heard gets hoarse.

How these eyes absorb and tire, integrate, avert and squeeze shut information emitted by liquid crystal displays of ions and headlines calling for action, pleading for change, selling sensationalism.

(the wedge that drives us apart is on sale and one click away).

And still, and surely, a prayer. Does it lessen the shock? Prayer. That the great divide rocks the shores of privileged feet so that they feel the laps of waters edge. That the chill of those waters shock internal temperatures into recognition. Prayer. That the great space, yes the void not the vacuum, is like the humidity of the East- that dense oppressive blanket heat, the blockade that slows time, the barrier that makes swift motion into slow motion, dripping molasses from a spoon. Forced to the gentle face of Eternal Essence. Feel that and remember true history. Remember white role, black and brown toll, power structures gifted from the queen. Dig the earth to find the roots and plant again. Regenerative. A prayer to shift the inner compass of Those Who Keep All That Power. The pendulum has to find center.

It starts within.

A prayer for empathy and safety.
A prayer for love and goodness.
A prayer for our neighbors' health.
A prayer for our plants.
A prayer for the 1,000 ways magical moments still rise.
A prayer for resistance and a prayer for peace.

Description
An account of the resource
This is a poem originally included with an installation. It was designed to depict a gateway made by two pieces of cholla, with candles in them, and attached to red cherry slabs with copper found on the banks of the Piscataquis River. The poem voices frustration and anger at the current administration and touches on the atrocities that have occurred since the pandemic began. And still, a prayer that goodness prevails.

DOVER-FOXCROFT – The COVID-19 pandemic and associated safety guidelines have been hard on most businesses, to say nothing of new business owners. Mike and Elizabeth Loomis dreamed of someday owning a bed and breakfast during his years working in higher education and hers running their household and raising their three children. Last spring, the couple, full of high hopes and big plans, purchased the Freedom House Bed & Breakfast.

“We closed at the end of March and basically opened in April of last year,” said Mike Loomis. “It’s been just over a year. We’ve done a lot of redecorating, painted every room, and now we’re working on painting the exterior.” Taking on a property this size includes a lot of deferred maintenance, he said.

Because the business showed a loss in its first year, when COVID struck, the couple did not qualify for the Payment Protection Program. “A great lady at the bank advocated for us twice, and we were turned down twice,” Loomis said. “That didn’t help. And apparently, we don’t qualify for unemployment. We’ve never been able to get through to them, but the lady at the Guilford Bed & Breakfast did and they told her no.”

The couple tried for several weeks, calling the Maine Department of Labor each day at 8 a.m. to discover “the queue was already full for the day,” Loomis said. “We would hear from the state that they were adding more people to help out, but it didn’t matter.”

At first, business was as expected according to occupancy numbers provided by the previous owners. The business lost some income over Christmas because the couple travels to see her family over the holidays every other year.

“In late fall and early winter, people were calling to make reservations for this time of year,” Loomis recalled. “We thought, ‘Man, this is great! We are going to have a great summer!’ In January, they started calling to cancel. In March, the Governor shut things down. Under her plan, we could still take in essential workers, and we do get a number of nurses.”

The bed and breakfast was also allowed to take people in on an emergency basis, which came in handy after that destructive snowstorm in April downed trees and left one local couple with no electricity. “They stayed with us for about a week,” Loomis said.

That was about all the business the couple saw until the weekend of June 5, when President Donald J. Trump visited the region. “We were full this weekend,” Loomis said on June 8. Guests were mostly Mainers, but there were a couple of “Boston Globe” essential workers in the mix.

Freedom House, which features a mix of guest rooms and small apartments, also served as a refuge for the couple’s daughter for eight weeks. “She was here from Chicago,” Loomis said. “She got out just before they shut it down.” She has now returned to the Windy City to resume her wedding flower business.

Running a hospitality business doesn’t feel very hospitable these days, Loomis said. “It feels so weird to sit on the porch to welcome guests, and they put on their mask and I put on my mask. We’re not shaking hands, and we keep our distance. People understand and have been great about that.”

Unable to serve breakfast at this point in the shutdown, the business basically offers “just a room,” but it’s a very clean room, Loomis said, adding that guests always complimented the couple on the cleanliness of the rooms, but that has been stepped up even more during the pandemic, Loomis said.

Governor Mills’ announcement last week that folks from New Hampshire and Vermont are welcome, and that those from other areas may visit Maine with either a 14-day quarantine or a recent negative COVID test, may help a little…maybe. Loomis doubts that COVID-19 tests will be readily available to those without symptoms in other states, as they have not been available here.

“At this point, I don’t think we have any other reservations for the rest of this month,” Loomis said. “Maybe if things open up, the phone will start ringing, but we’re pretty much counting this year as a loss. We will have to live on our savings, and we’re looking for part-time jobs.”

Elizabeth is partway through the process to become a U.S. Census taker, he said. “And I’m open. I used to work in higher education, so that’s another crazy business right now, but I’ve also worked in retail. Right now, I’m just busy painting the house and that keeps me out of trouble. It’s not small! My son is here from college helping me.

“We know it’s going to be a terrible year,” he continued, recalling a recent trip to Bar Harbor. “Acadia just opened up, and some of the businesses, but some of them, you could tell they’re just done. They’ve decided they can’t make it.”

But Loomis said they understand why Governor Mills is moving slowly, and that she is basing reopening on “the facts, the science. We have to be careful and do the best we can, but I think a lot of people are going out of business because of this.”

For now, Loomis said, they are “putzing along, trying to stay busy doing projects for the business. Until there’s a vaccine and people have more confidence that this thing is under control, I just don’t think they will be doing travel as much,” he said. “I have this nagging feeling that 2020, as a year to make money, is gone. It’s just not going to happen for hospitality. We are looking forward to 2021.”
