From the desk of the Head of School

Closing Year Events Tentatively Planned with Current Guidelines

Planning the close of the year and still maintaining traditional closing events this year is at the least very difficult. With the current guidelines, the following dates are set but are subject to change.

On May 15th the drive-up Rose Award Ceremony will take place in the faculty parking lot by the Cotton Garden at 2 pm. By invitation, each family will remain in their vehicle while the ceremony is held outside.

The Senior Award Ceremony will happen at the same time as scheduled on Wednesday, June 3rd, at 6 pm. The ceremony will be live-streamed and taped and the awards will be mailed to the recipients.

The Undergraduate Award Ceremony will be streamed on Monday, June 8th, at 6 pm.

The Senior Tea will take place in some form on Thursday, June 4th, at 1:45 pm depending on grouping size restrictions.

The Final Assembly will take place on Friday, June 5th at 1:30, probably in an electronic fashion (Zoom) as the traditional events can happen including the showing of the senior video.

June 5th is the last day of school.

Prom planning is taking place depending on group size restrictions in the month of June.

Graduation will be scheduled for Saturday, June 27th, at 7 pm. Depending on the State of Maine guidelines, graduation can potentially take place at one of three venues: East Lawn, Oakes Field, or at the Piscataquis County Ice Arena parking lot as a drive-up graduation. By scheduling graduation in late June the hope is that the guidelines will allow a large group event with physical distancing. Guidelines for graduation will be shared at a later date but, for example, if it is a drive-up graduation, each graduate will have one vehicle, two if there are step-parents that are part of your family unit, due to limited available spaces. Prior to the ceremony, a potential parade leading up to PCIA will be organized.

2020 Rose Award Recipients

The 89th Rose Award Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 15th, honoring the top 15% of the permanent members in the class of 2020. Usually, the recipients do not know about receiving this prestigious award because the ceremony is held in the midst of the school day. Obviously, circumstances have prevented this from happening. This is an annual Foxcroft Academy tradition started in 1931 by Headmaster Frank G. Stone. The students will receive their rose and medallion during this ceremony. Congratulations to Kylie Butts, Ethan Curtis, Megan Fuller, MacKenzie Harmon, Jacob Ireland Clark LaChance, Leyao Liang, Khanh Nguyen Phuong Le , Khanh Nguyen Quynh Le, Thuy Phuong Le, Jacob Raynes, Molly Rhoda, Kiet Vo, and Vy Vo. The Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the Class of 2020 will be announced at the May 15th ceremony.

2020 Academic Hall of Fame Inductees

Foxcroft Academy is pleased to announce the newest inductees to be added to the FA Academic Hall of Fame. The Class of 2020 includes Douglas C. Smith ‘68 (College Professor), John Durham ‘76 (Orthopedic Surgeon), Lisa Margonelli ‘83 (Writer/Editor), Tim Blakely ‘92 (Lawyer), and Andy Lizotte ‘00 (Assistant U.S. Attorney). Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, we are not able to have a full banquet and awards ceremony at this time for these worthy inductees, but we will be honoring them in the future. These five individuals join 53 others as members of the prestigious Academic Hall of Fame. Congratulations to the recip

Val: Speaking just for myself, of course... How does someone keep what they never had in the first place? I listened to audiobooks and knit the most complex patterns I could find and never really noticed the time go by. Made several things and never bothered to block them, just put them in a pile and started other one--it's not about the having, just the doing. (She also sewed cool masks for people, like this one she made for me. --KB)

Michelle: My Zoom meeting doodles. I create doodles while I listen.

Phyllis: How I spent my Covid-19 staycation...

Tom: The pandemic has coaxed me back to writing in an unexpected way: "podcasting." writing my memoirs in "episodes" and recording them as 'Boomer Monologues' (in my high-tech "sound studio tee shirt closet"). You can tune in to my podcast at this link: http://anchor.fm/tom-lyford7.

Greta: Working on my small (but growing) garden has been fun. I dug up the yard by hand and bought veggie seedlings from Ripley Farm. I also planted some flower seeds and had some gift plants--including lemon thyme (smells so good!) and rhubarb from Ellie Leary.

Pat: I'm not sure I kept my complete sanity. I still struggle from time to time, but I tried limiting exposure to network news and substituted calming vibes from Mozart, J.S. Bach, and some of Vivaldi's music. Also, my knitting always brings me peace, and Dan's sense of humor has lightened up many "dark" days.

Kim: Think I agree with Val & Pat. That grip is tenuous at best these days, but I digress. Watching backyard creatures & wildlife & walking in the woods has given me some peaceful moments during this trying time.

Piscataquis County Soil & Water Conservation District’s Response to COVID-19
A Message from Kacey Weber, Educational Coordinator

Let’s take a moment to breathe together. This has been a challenging time. We are all doing what we can to keep ourselves and our communities healthy as we navigate the COVID-19 global pandemic. As things progress and change, we have all had to adapt and do so quickly. We should be proud of our collective response and continue to follow directives from national and state health officials and local leaders.

The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District closed our physical office on March 13th at 4:30PM, in an effort to protect our valuable staff and constituents. Our office is closed until May 1st, opening on May 4th at 8AM, although this date is subject to change. Our entire staff is currently telecommuting and able to serve our customers, communicate with program presenters and participants and continue our valuable work. We have posted updates about and at the Law Farm—we encourage folks to utilize this public space, but to plan ahead and refrain from using the privy. We have also shared information about the Demonstration Forest, another public land owned and maintained by the PCSWCD. We hope these two public lands can provide a safe outdoor place to explore while social distancing.

As we progress through this, we have had to make changes to a number of our programs. For clarity, we have included a full list of our events, with updates and changes listed for each one. See page 3 for this list.

Both our Tree & Plant Sale and Trout Sale are still on. Since both sales are designed as pre-order sales, we feel that we will be able to manage pick-up days to ensure the safety of our customers. Orders for our Tree & Plant sale are due by April 15th and Trout Sale orders are due by May 18th, 2020. Tree & Plant Sale orders should be mailed with payment to 42 Engdahl Drive, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426 OR can be emailed to info@piscataquisswcd.org and paid via paypal - paypal.me/piscataquisswcd. This year, all plants available to order are sourced from three local, Maine farms—Checkerberry Farm in Parkman, Ripley Farm in Dover-Foxcroft and North Branch Farm in Monroe. All three farms are following CDC guidelines and are working hard to ensure the safety and quality of the products you will order. FMI on the Tree & Plant Sale, including access to the full catalog and order form, visit our Tree & Plant sale page here: http://www.piscataquisswcd.org/tree-and-plant-sale/ . For the Trout Sale, customers with a valid State of Maine stocking and transporting permit can purchase 6-8 inch brook trout for $3/fish. Stocking private ponds provides both recreation and nutrition—a win, win! For Trout Sale information and ordering, visit our Trout Sale page here: http://www.piscataquisswcd.org/trout-sale/.

We want to thank you all for your continued support. Postponing events and not being able to carryout programming has had a deep impact on our organization. If you are able, we ask that you consider donating your registration fee if we need to reschedule a workshop, read about and consider being a Conservation Champion and stay in touch with us. We appreciate any support you are able to provide.

Stay well and safe, friends! Lynn Lubas, Technical Coordinator, Sarah Robinson, Executive Director, Kacey Weber, Educational Coordinator

PCSWCD Working Through COVID: Impacts & Updates

I started my March COVID Update article with “let’s take a moment to breathe together” and I would say that is needed this Fall as well! It has been a difficult time and we have ALL been a part of major changes in our professional and personal lives. We want to thank you all for your continued support. As we closed our office doors to the public, postponed events, put safety guidelines in place and made adjustment after adjustment, you stood by us, met us with understanding and we appreciate that.

Despite the adjustments and with new standard operating procedures in place, the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District has experienced a number of successes in the 2020 events season. All planned events that exceeded in-person limits or had elements that could not be worked with, will be offered in 2021. The wonderful presenters that work with us were happy to offer programming for us in the coming year and we look forward to working with them and seeing all of you at these events. We also have been working with presenters to offer multiple sessions of outdoor events to both allow for social distancing and accommodate the overwhelming demand for programming. We were able meet the need AND do so safely - that’s a win, win! We offered three outdoor educational programs this summer - Rotational Grazing with Wendy Russell of Widdershins Farm, Wild Edible Foraging with Tom Seymour and Chainsaw Safety for Women. Each of these events reached capacity and our participants respectfully followed safety guidelines.

Another great success story from Spring and Summer 2020 has been the growth of the LakeSmart program. As we postponed events, we created room to expand LakeSmart and doubled the number of evaluations done in 2019. The program is an evaluation program that helps waterfront property owners address erosion issues on their properties. The evaluations were offered safely and were a great way to make progress on the protection of our natural resources. After all, lakes, ponds and water resources are vitally important!

Our District received support through the Keep Maine Healthy Grant via the Town of Dover-Foxcroft and was able to install hand sanitizer pumps at both of our public lands. Additionally, we purchased portable hand-washing stations, making all outdoor events places where participants can wash their hands and keep themselves and others safe.

These successes would not have been possible without the support received from participants, supporters and our wonderful presenters. Thank you for working with us! As we approach the remainder of 2020 and look forward to 2021, we are ready to continue to be creative, work collaboratively with all of you and offer quality, in-demand programming. We will continue to promote natural resource conservation in every way possible.

Please reach out to us and let us know what you would like to see for programming in 2021. Additionally, if you have questions about anything we are working on, how we could possibly work together, we are all ears!

Thank you!

Kacey Weber, Educational Coordinator, Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District
