<text>Dear Parents/Guardians/Students,

We have reached the end of the year and I wanted to share information for a successful close, share some important dates, and plans for next year. I am very proud of the students and grateful for the community support.

School issued material can be returned to the Academy anytime now if the students have completed their courses. During next week, June 8th-12th, between 8 am and 4 pm, the materials can be returned by placing them in the container outside the gym lobby door. If you use this method please make sure the material is labeled with the student’s name. You can also “buzz” the door and Mrs. Smith will let you in and you can place the material on the table in the lobby. If you are unable to return the material, please contact Mrs. Smith and she will make arrangements for the material to be picked up.

Final Assembly will take place this Friday, June 5th, at 1:30 pm. We are using Zoom so that we can show everyone the senior slideshow. Also, seniors will be “willing gifts” as per tradition to undergrads. I have invited all students and staff and encourage you all to attend so that we honor our seniors who have lost the most during this pandemic. Speaking of seniors, your Senior Tea will take place on Thursday, June 11th, at 1:45 pm on campus on the front lawn and the east lawn, ensuring no group will exceed the size of fifty. Ames through LaChance will start at the front lawn site and Lemon through Willey will start at the east lawn site. There will be an exchange so that seniors will be able to see all of their classmates. Graduation, weather permitting, will take place on Saturday, June 27th, at 7 pm, and I am still in hopes that it will take place on Oakes Field. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for Chief Reardon who has been very helpful.

The big question is, “What will next year look like?” We do not know but we are planning for three scenarios: online, blended, or in person. We are in hopes of starting on September 1st with all students. Of course, it depends on the State of Maine and CDC guidelines, but we want our students back. Students whose grades seemingly declined due to the change to remote learning will possibly be able to make up unmet standards and this consideration will be made on an individual basis.

We are in the midst of tumultuous times dealing with social unrest and a pandemic, which heightens the need for education. Please be watchful for communication about plans for the start of school in the fall. Students, I wish you all a very safe and healthy summer, but I can’t wait to get you back in school!

All my best,

Arnold Shorey</text>

<text>From the desk of the Head of School

Reflections on the Last Three Months/Planning for 2020

The faculty members of Foxcroft Academy were so happy to be able to come on Monday, June 8th to reflect on the close of the second semester and start the seemingly impossible task of planning for the fall of 2020. Here are some major points that have come to the forefront.

At the time of writing this report, 101 out of the 114 seniors have met all the standards and requirements for graduation with 11 seniors very close to meeting their standards for the June 27th graduation (so there is still time for the seniors to be in good standing). This was due to tremendous effort on the part of seniors and teachers, especially during the transition from in-person to remote learning.

The number of students able to participate in the boarding program this upcoming fall is in question, though we continue to receive applications and undergrad students plan to return if they are able to do so. We have some boarding students staying throughout the summer to ensure that they are able to return to school in the fall and not risk being unable to return from their country. This past spring, we were successful in having 40 boarding students remaining at Foxcroft Academy, restricted to the campus for over 12 weeks avoiding exposure to COVID-19. Quarantining and testing are in the plans for the future to properly screen students arriving at Foxcroft Academy before they enter the school population.

At the writing of this report, it appears to be possible to have an outdoor graduation on Oakes Field where graduates and immediate family members will be able to spread out wearing masks in the outdoors. Graduation will be on June 27th at 7 pm with a rain date scheduled for Sunday at 9 am. Dr. Mark Stitham ‘68 is the graduation speaker with Mr. Wayne Strout as the faculty speaker. Clark LaChance is the salutatorian and Ethan Curtis is the valedictorian. Senior Tea will take place this Friday (moved from Thursday due to the rainy forecast) at 1:45 pm on the east lawn and front lawn keeping the size of the group less than 50 at each site. Chief Reardon has been instrumental in working with Foxcroft Academy in helping these plans become a reality.

There are plans in place to support students whose grades have suffered due to the abrupt change from inperson instruction to remote learning. Each case will be considered on an individual basis with teacher and parent meetings. This summer there will be a Special Education credit recovery program, thanks to RSU 68, a Foxcroft Academy credit recovery program, and in conjunction with Principal Gudroe, the Freshman Academy will take place in late July for up to 15 eighth graders that will need to meet unmet standards before starting their freshman year (this will be the fifth year of the Freshman Academy to help with the transition from 8th grade to high school with a very good track record). In the fall, students will have the opportunity to make use of the academic support program to also make up unmet standards.

Planning for next year is a very difficult thing to do as we are unsure of CDC and State guidelines. We hope that we will be fully in session with all students present (all constituents want this). If remote learning is mandated, both teachers and students have three months of experience that we will continue to build upon. Monday’s inservice was spent on developing our best guess of what the school year will start like. We are anticipating that blended learning will be the model in place. This is the combination of using online learning in conjunction with in-person learning driven by physical distancing that will still need to be in place. Safety protocols will include: daily screening as students and staff enter the building, everyone wearing a mask, cleaning routines during the day and after school. Protocols and procedures guiding hallway traffic, bathroom use, lunchroom seating, locker room use, etc. Many variables need to be considered in scheduling students on a twice a week schedule such as access to science labs, in-person assessments, hands on activities (welding, small engines, etc.), students who need in-person support, siblings who attend SeDoMoCha, limitations due to traveling on the bus, etc. As you can see there are a lot of considerations and we will be communicating throughout the summer including possible Parent Advisory Council meetings as we are able to firm up the plans.

I cannot thank the students, parents, teachers, and our community enough for their Herculean efforts in adjusting to and supporting student remote learning. Collaboration and communication will still be needed as we adjust to the possibility of a blended learning model where flexibility and adaptability will be a must. I think we all can agree that we are fortunate to live where we do!</text>

              <text>April 9, 2020

Dear Parent/Guardian,

With the Commissioner of Education recommending to Governor Mills that Maine schools should continue remote learning for the rest of the school year, and in coordination with RSU 68, I want to make it official that Foxcroft Academy will finish the school year with remote learning. Though this is a decision I do not want to make, we live in extraordinary times that require extraordinary steps.

With this information, we are now able to plan for the close of the year and will share that information in the very near future. I would like to share some information as I know there are and will be, a lot of questions.

There will be an April Break from April 20th-24th. Students and teachers havebeen working very hard and all deserve a restful break.

The last day of school will be on Friday, June 5th.

Foxcroft Academy will be having professional development days on Monday, April 27th and Tuesday, April 28th. No school for students.

Coordination will take place to have student lockers cleaned out, the contents placed in a bag with the student’s name on it, and delivered to his/her home.

Work is being planned to ensure that many of our traditional activities will continue in a different form and we will announce the dates, times, and type offorum in the near future (Undergrad Awards Night, Senior Awards Night, etc.)

Though this is a good time to have a prom because of six-foot social distancing(a little humor), it is impossible to plan for this event at this time.

Today, senior leaders will meet with the Superintending Committee to request senior privileges, a long time tradition at least over the past ten years. There aren’t a lot of privileges to be had during remote learning, but it is important to not have the seniors miss out on their closing activities. My heart goes out to them. I am determined that graduation will take place but it will be later in the summer. There have been graduations at Foxcroft Academy for 197 years and that streak will remain unbroken.

Stay Well and Safe,

Arnold Shorey, Head of School</text>

              <text>April 2, 2020

Dear Parent/Guardian,

With a new executive order delivered by Governor Mills on Tuesday afternoon, I would like toprovide you an update of what Foxcroft Academy is doing. For the past two and a half weeks, Foxcroft Academy has been operating on an “essential staff status” as we support student online learning as well as caring for the health and safety of 41 boarding students. Here are some reminders and information that will be in place until May 1st in accordance with theexecutive order.

The Governor stated that schools will stay closed at least until May 1st. In all likelihood, everyone should be prepared for online learning continuing for the rest of the year.

Foxcroft Academy is closed to the public which means students should not pick up ordrop off material. Through Rowell’s and Weymouth’s bus services, materials willcontinue to be picked up or delivered. Please continue to email Ms. Smith and Ms.Weatherbee to make arrangements. The lunch/breakfast pickup will continue between10 am and 12 noon, Monday, Wednesday, Friday at all of the same locations including Foxcroft Academy (10-11 am). Lunch and breakfast pick up will not take place during April break, April 20th - April 24th.

Unfortunately, and in compliance with the executive order, the Burns-Johnson Tennis Complex will be closed to not promote large groups and to continue social distancing. The track is closed between 2 pm and 7 pm for boarding students and dorm families touse. If you do use the track during the other hours please practice social distancing. Foxcroft Academy is proud to share its facility with the public, but during this crisis, our focus needs to promote best practices that prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Within the next few weeks, there will be official announcements concerning Spring sports and we are predicting that they will be canceled.

It is heartbreaking that these steps need to be taken and it is obvious that we all need to participate in similar actions to do our part to fight COVID-19. Teachers are reporting good participation and effort by the students in their online learning. Please keep in mind that all of our support services are in place and ready to assist students and families in any way that we can. We certainly want students to be actively engaged, but more importantly, we want your family to be well and safe. It is going to take all us working together and making sacrifices to overcome this pandemic.

All my best,

Arnold Shorey</text>

              <text>
DOVER-FOXCROFT – Childcare needs shifted rapidly in March as first, schools, and then many businesses, shut down due to COVID-19. Parents had to help more with children’s school work while also working from home themselves or putting in long hours at essential workplaces each day. Childcare centers faced shifting guidelines, as well as uncertain client numbers and income. As Maine businesses slowly reopen, guidelines, numbers of clients and amount of income remain in flux.

“I work as an administrative assistant for a company that runs the medical departments of five different county jails,” said Kelly Chabot, a single mother of four from Dover-Foxcroft. Xander, 10, lives with his father, who has underlying medical conditions, “so I am trying to minimize his exposure to keep his father safe,” she said. “I don’t even get to see my son.”

That leaves Xavier, 11; Kaliyah, 6; and Malachai, 1, still in need of childcare on work days, and help with schoolwork for the two oldest. “Life since COVID-19 has been crazy,” Chabot said. “The school shut down first, and then Xavier and Kaliyah’s daycare. I had to scramble to find somewhere for them to go, since I am an essential worker due to the fact that I process payroll and am considered support staff for our healthcare providers. I got lucky and Malachai’s daycare was able to take them on.”

The biggest challenge has been fitting distance learning into an already packed day. “By the time we get home, it’s supper and then baths and bed for the younger two,” said Chabot. “If I don’t stick to our normal schedule, mornings are a train wreck, especially with Kaliyah. Xavier, for the most part, can do his work on his own with little to no help from me. But I am finding it harder and harder to make time to help the kids.”

The saving grace has been her daycare. “I send school work in with Kaliyah and they help her with a couple of pages a day,” Chabot said.

The other way family life has changed is with safety concerns. “I don’t allow the kids into any stores, or honestly, out in public right now,” she said. “We get up, drop off at daycare, I come to work, get off work, pick them up from daycare, and then go back home. If I need anything from the store, I try to make it work before I pick them up, but with all the new rules regarding stores, it’s hard. I have a pickup time that I have to follow [at the daycare] or I am charged a late fee. It’s stressful and exhausting and scary.”

Jaime Lovejoy’s Daycare has been providing childcare in Dover-Foxcroft for 15 years, but none of them has been like 2020. Lovejoy typically tends to six to eight children ages 3 months to 10 or 11 years.

“When this first started and they closed the schools, I had to think about our daily routine. I knew that was going to change because there would be school work to do and that was going to have to be incorporated,” said Lovejoy, who immediately encouraged parents to send packets of school work into the daycare with their kids.

The number of children also shifted. There were more kiddos needing daycare with schools closed and businesses open so that parents had work – and then less in need of childcare when businesses closed and parents could be at home. Lovejoy has had two to four children most days during the shutdown. With businesses slowly starting to reopen, she expects that number will go back up soon.

Always a stickler for cleanliness, she said sanitization routines did not change much at the daycare to comply with state safety guidelines. “We always do handwashing, but we had to make sure the younger ones were taking the full 20 seconds and doing it property, so I found myself helping them more to make sure. And I’ve always made sure, when the kids put something in their mouths, that it gets washed right away.”

Most of Lovejoy’s essential worker families are in the healthcare field, so she trusts them to be aware of and practicing virus safety measures. Still, there have been concessions for safety in her household. Lovejoy’s husband has done all the shopping outside the home to minimize her exposure, and thus that of the children in her care. And recently, when an online order of new toys arrived, “I left it on the porch and got disposable wipes and wiped down the box and what was inside before I brought it into the house,” she said.

Adding school work to the daily routine hasn’t been “too bad,” said Lovejoy. “They do get distracted. You’re not going to sit there for three or four hours with them doing it, because you’ve got littler ones you’ve got to keep occupied while you help the older ones. I carve it out, two or three hours a day. We do some first thing in the morning. Then, if it’s a nice day we go outside for a little while, or if it’s rainy, I let them have free play for a little while. When I’m cooking lunch, I have them go back to the school work, and during naptime while the younger ones are sleeping. So we are not doing it all at once.”

With ages ranging from 1 to 8 these days, keeping everyone entertained can be a challenge, too – thus the online order of toys and games. Lovejoy went over options with the children and let them help pick which items to order.

As more parents return to work and more children arrive at the daycare, “I can definitely tell the kids missed each other,” said Lovejoy. “Watching them come through the door and interact with each other, you can tell they are all happy to see each other and play again. I think that’s been the hardest thing on most of the kids. When you have your routine and it gets changed and you don’t understand why it’s changed, that’s hard.”

Recently, out on a walk with her husband, Lovejoy saw a former daycare kiddo riding her bike. “We were on one sidewalk and she was on the other side and we talked. You could tell it was hard on her, too.”

And Lovejoy, who has stayed home throughout the bulk of the shutdown, has enjoyed starting to go out a bit more, as well. “I’ve been out here and there, for my own sanity,” she said, laughing.
