Text of your story
June 3, the Tuesday we started Curbside Service at TFL had that first day back to school in the fall feel. Or the first day at a new job. Because that’s what it was really. After two and half months of working at home, it was both comforting and strange to be back.
Figuring out how to work together and stay apart, what mask worked best—when it was ok to pull it down or remove it, when to wear gloves, learning all the new protocols and procedures.
We sort of nervously danced around one another as we got used to each other again in this very different world, but Greta had a plan in place, she showed us what to do, we asked questions, made mistakes, tweaked things, and kept going.
Turning the key to the book drop and finding a gazillion books inside—wow, the word had spread to start returning materials. We were off and running.
More patrons were placing holds through the catalog, a positive sign, while many called and asked us to check if we had a book (or books) they wanted or for recommendations on what to read next.
The process fell into place: pulling the holds list, collecting the items, calling patrons to tell them books were waiting for them, checking the books out, and placing them on the table. Before long we expanded our pickup hours to Tuesday-Friday 9-5.
The awkwardness and trepidation faded quickly once we saw so many smiles (or smiling eyes above masks) on familiar faces as we approached cars, carrying shopping bags filled with books—placing them in trunks and back seats.
They were glad to see us and even happier that they could hold actual books in their hands. And seeing that “New” sticker on the cover seemed to give them a much needed and appreciated boost.
Once again, we found ourselves surrounded by books, not just on shelves, spread out on tables too. The returns in quarantine, piled high on the table formerly reserved for puzzles. Our impressive antique display table turned into PPE central with masks, gloves, and cleaning supplies. Another table in front of it covered with pick-up orders—handwritten white slips in each.
Soon, the phone rang again. “I’m out in the parking lot,” said a friendly voice.
“Ok, I’ll be right out!” turned out to be slightly wishful thinking on my part as I struggled to put on rubber gloves in a speedy fashion. But Tom was at the ready, gloves on, books in the bag, walking out the door. Happily chatting with patrons, who like us, longed for a brief taste of the past in this uncertain new time.

<p>Opening night for the Center Theatre’s latest production “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare” (abridged)[revised] is Friday, Nov. 6. The show will be performed live at the Center Theatre, following all state and federal safety guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but will also be streamed live on-line for those that don’t feel comfortable coming to the Theatre in person.</p>
<p>The play, written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, is a hilarious comedy in which three energetic actors perform all of the works of William Shakespeare in only 90 minutes. The production promises to deliver some much needed laughs, according to the Center Theatre’s Executive Director Patrick Myers.</p>
<p>"2020 has left us all needing to laugh a little …or maybe a lot…and enjoy live Theatre,” Myers said, “This show with these talented actors will certainly let you forget about your troubles for awhile.” Myers also said that the Center Theatre is doing everything required to make the live performances safe for actors, patrons, volunteers and staff.</p>
<p>“We specifically chose this production because of the small cast size,” Myers stated, “It made it easier to keep actors safe during rehearsals and performances. We will have a maximum of 50 people in the audience per show, and attendees will be required to wear masks while they are not eating concessions in the auditorium. The Theatre will also be thoroughly cleaning the facility between performances, ensuring outside air is circulated through the auditorium at all times, separating groups in the auditorium to enforce distancing, and other measures to make sure everyone feels safe attending the show.”</p>
<p>However, the performances will also be streamed live on-line for people who want to see the show, but do not want to attend a live in-person event.</p>
<p>The show will be performed from Nov. 6-14 and tickets for the live show or livestream are both available at <a href="http://www.centertheatre.org/">Center Theatre.org</a>. The Center Theatre is 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to make arts, education and entertainment accessible to our rural communities to engage and inspire.</p>

From the desk of the Head of School<br /><br /><strong>Closing Year Events Tentatively Planned with Current Guidelines<br /><br /></strong>Planning the close of the year and still maintaining traditional closing events this year is at the least very difficult. With the current guidelines, the following dates are set but are subject to change. <br /><ul><li>On May 15th the drive-up Rose Award Ceremony will take place in the faculty parking lot by the Cotton Garden at 2 pm. By invitation, each family will remain in their vehicle while the ceremony is held outside.</li>
<li>The Senior Award Ceremony will happen at the same time as scheduled on Wednesday, June 3rd, at 6 pm. The ceremony will be live-streamed and taped and the awards will be mailed to the recipients.</li>
<li>The Undergraduate Award Ceremony will be streamed on Monday, June 8th, at 6 pm.</li>
<li>The Senior Tea will take place in some form on Thursday, June 4th, at 1:45 pm depending on grouping size restrictions.</li>
<li>The Final Assembly will take place on Friday, June 5th at 1:30, probably in an electronic fashion (Zoom) as the traditional events can happen including the showing of the senior video.</li>
<li>June 5th is the last day of school.</li>
<li>Prom planning is taking place depending on group size restrictions in the month of June.</li>
<li>Graduation will be scheduled for Saturday, June 27th, at 7 pm. Depending on the State of Maine guidelines, graduation can potentially take place at one of three venues: East Lawn, Oakes Field, or at the Piscataquis County Ice Arena parking lot as a drive-up graduation. By scheduling graduation in late June the hope is that the guidelines will allow a large group event with physical distancing. Guidelines for graduation will be shared at a later date but, for example, if it is a drive-up graduation, each graduate will have one vehicle, two if there are step-parents that are part of your family unit, due to limited available spaces. Prior to the ceremony, a potential parade leading up to PCIA will be organized.</li>
</ul><strong>2020 Rose Award Recipients</strong> <br /><br />The 89th Rose Award Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 15th, honoring the top 15% of the permanent members in the class of 2020. Usually, the recipients do not know about receiving this prestigious award because the ceremony is held in the midst of the school day. Obviously, circumstances have prevented this from happening. This is an annual Foxcroft Academy tradition started in 1931 by Headmaster Frank G. Stone. The students will receive their rose and medallion during this ceremony. Congratulations to Kylie Butts, Ethan Curtis, Megan Fuller, MacKenzie Harmon, Jacob Ireland Clark LaChance, Leyao Liang, Khanh Nguyen Phuong Le , Khanh Nguyen Quynh Le, Thuy Phuong Le, Jacob Raynes, Molly Rhoda, Kiet Vo, and Vy Vo. The Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the Class of 2020 will be announced at the May 15th ceremony. <br /><br /><strong>2020 Academic Hall of Fame Inductees</strong><br /><br />Foxcroft Academy is pleased to announce the newest inductees to be added to the FA Academic Hall of Fame. The Class of 2020 includes Douglas C. Smith ‘68 (College Professor), John Durham ‘76 (Orthopedic Surgeon), Lisa Margonelli ‘83 (Writer/Editor), Tim Blakely ‘92 (Lawyer), and Andy Lizotte ‘00 (Assistant U.S. Attorney). Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, we are not able to have a full banquet and awards ceremony at this time for these worthy inductees, but we will be honoring them in the future. These five individuals join 53 others as members of the prestigious Academic Hall of Fame. Congratulations to the recip

<em>From the desk of the Head of School</em><br /><br /><strong>Reflections on the Last Three Months/Planning for 2020</strong><br /><br />The faculty members of Foxcroft Academy were so happy to be able to come on Monday, June 8th to reflect on the close of the second semester and start the seemingly impossible task of planning for the fall of 2020. Here are some major points that have come to the forefront. <br /><ul><li>At the time of writing this report, 101 out of the 114 seniors have met all the standards and requirements for graduation with 11 seniors very close to meeting their standards for the June 27th graduation (so there is still time for the seniors to be in good standing). This was due to tremendous effort on the part of seniors and teachers, especially during the transition from in-person to remote learning.</li>
<li>The number of students able to participate in the boarding program this upcoming fall is in question, though we continue to receive applications and undergrad students plan to return if they are able to do so. We have some boarding students staying throughout the summer to ensure that they are able to return to school in the fall and not risk being unable to return from their country. This past spring, we were successful in having 40 boarding students remaining at Foxcroft Academy, restricted to the campus for over 12 weeks avoiding exposure to COVID-19. Quarantining and testing are in the plans for the future to properly screen students arriving at Foxcroft Academy before they enter the school population.</li>
<li>At the writing of this report, it appears to be possible to have an outdoor graduation on Oakes Field where graduates and immediate family members will be able to spread out wearing masks in the outdoors. Graduation will be on June 27th at 7 pm with a rain date scheduled for Sunday at 9 am. Dr. Mark Stitham ‘68 is the graduation speaker with Mr. Wayne Strout as the faculty speaker. Clark LaChance is the salutatorian and Ethan Curtis is the valedictorian. Senior Tea will take place this Friday (moved from Thursday due to the rainy forecast) at 1:45 pm on the east lawn and front lawn keeping the size of the group less than 50 at each site. Chief Reardon has been instrumental in working with Foxcroft Academy in helping these plans become a reality.</li>
<li>There are plans in place to support students whose grades have suffered due to the abrupt change from inperson instruction to remote learning. Each case will be considered on an individual basis with teacher and parent meetings. This summer there will be a Special Education credit recovery program, thanks to RSU 68, a Foxcroft Academy credit recovery program, and in conjunction with Principal Gudroe, the Freshman Academy will take place in late July for up to 15 eighth graders that will need to meet unmet standards before starting their freshman year (this will be the fifth year of the Freshman Academy to help with the transition from 8th grade to high school with a very good track record). In the fall, students will have the opportunity to make use of the academic support program to also make up unmet standards.</li>
<li>Planning for next year is a very difficult thing to do as we are unsure of CDC and State guidelines. We hope that we will be fully in session with all students present (all constituents want this). If remote learning is mandated, both teachers and students have three months of experience that we will continue to build upon. Monday’s inservice was spent on developing our best guess of what the school year will start like. We are anticipating that blended learning will be the model in place. This is the combination of using online learning in conjunction with in-person learning driven by physical distancing that will still need to be in place. Safety protocols will include: daily screening as students and staff enter the building, everyone wearing a mask, cleaning routines during the day and after school. Protocols and procedures guiding hallway traffic, bathroom use, lunchroom seating, locker room use, etc. Many variables need to be considered in scheduling students on a twice a week schedule such as access to science labs, in-person assessments, hands on activities (welding, small engines, etc.), students who need in-person support, siblings who attend SeDoMoCha, limitations due to traveling on the bus, etc. As you can see there are a lot of considerations and we will be communicating throughout the summer including possible Parent Advisory Council meetings as we are able to firm up the plans.</li>
</ul>
I cannot thank the students, parents, teachers, and our community enough for their Herculean efforts in adjusting to and supporting student remote learning. Collaboration and communication will still be needed as we adjust to the possibility of a blended learning model where flexibility and adaptability will be a must. I think we all can agree that we are fortunate to live where we do!

Good Afternoon.....
The following message is from Foxcroft Academy Counseling Services. There is a lot of valuable information for you during this time of uncertainly, Please reach out to any of our counselors should you have any questions or concerns. Enjoy the weekend.
Good afternoon FA parents and guardians,
While I realize that there is a great deal of information coming from all sorts of directions it is important to share the below thoughts, ideas and resources with you in an effort to support you and your child according to our new norms. Several nights ago an email to all FA students was sent from the Counseling Services office. The email outlined ideas to stay busy and the importance of talking about stress at a time like this when so many unknowns are out there, please ask your student to share the contents of that correspondence. The email was also sent to remind kids that while we as counselors might not be in the building we are certainly available! In that vein, the counseling services office felt that a similar email, but focused toward the parent, might be helpful. If you have a moment please take a look and if there is anything that we can do to help you or your family please let us know. As a reminder, here is how we divide our caseload:
A-La day students: Kandi Martin kandi.martin@foxcroftacademy.org
Lb-Z day students: Laurie Mallett. laura.mallett@foxcroftacademy.org
Boarding student counselor and school social worker: Karen Smith. karen.smith@foxcroftacademy.org
Helpful thoughts:
1. Watch for concerns from your child and respond in a non-alarming way.
* For non-urgent matters, utilize your child's school counselor or contact the Disaster Distress Helpline at: 1-800-985-5990. Students or adults needing to talk can also text talkwithus to 66746. The helpline will get you in touch with a professional who can provide on the spot emotional or mental health counseling related to what’s happening with the coronavirus pandemic. This helpline is free, confidential and available 24/7
* For urgent matters involve your child’s doctor and access resources that can provide immediate intervention such as the Crisis Hotline or authorities.
The Maine Crisis Hotline number is: 1-888-568-1112.
To the extent possible, check-in with your child or children frequently. Often, talking about things can alleviate fear and anxiety and can make a big difference. When your child hears that worry and a healthy fear of the unknown is normal, there will likely be a sense of relief.
2. Know that while you might be sticking to the guidelines of social distancing by not allowing your kids to hang out with friends, others, unfortunately, are not. Have a plan on how to address this frustration with your child or if it hasn’t happened yet - prepare for the fact that it probably will! Have a response on hand and consider telling your child that they can blame you when talking with friends about their inability to get together and assure them that as soon as safety guidelines allow, plans will be made to meet up with friends! Maybe even talk about what that will look like and start planning a post-COVID 19 celebration (but be prepared to fulfill that promise!)
3. Be cautious of conversations that you have around your children but also be age-appropriate and realistic about the concern. End conversations on a positive note whenever possible.
4. Is there someone your child is worried about? A sick friend who is immunocompromised, an elderly family member, a pregnant friend or relative who is more at risk if she becomes ill? Ask your child if this is a worry of his/hers.
5. Supply your child with reputable sources if he/she wants factual information or you believe that your child would benefit from accessing a reputable source.
• For the latest from the Maine CDC: https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/contact-us.shtml
• For help working through mental health concerns such as anxiety or depression check out the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI):
https://www.nami.org
6. Talk with your child - sometimes conversation proves to unearth fears and anxiety that you never considered.
7. Take note of your child’s activity level or non-activity level. Set aside time each day where it is expected that they won't be in their room or isolated but allow them to help design that time.
8. Plan family time, call/facetime a relative for a check-in, play games - dig out a deck of cards or dust off the Wii, take walks and include the dog, schedule a movie night, be creative and have a picnic in the car, start baking, make a meal together, design a random act of kindness activity, require your kids to help around the house even if they never have before - kids need to be busy! (Check out the Rainbow activity in Dover Foxcroft)
9. Be aware of your own personal fears, frustration levels etc. Take time when you need time. Kids can usually pick up on parent stress.
10. Continue to have downtime at home but balance it with busy time as well.
11. It may sound silly but move furniture in your living room every few days and allow your child to move his/her furniture. Changing things up provides a feeling of a new space.
12. For parents to seniors - the Class of 2020 is POTENTIALLY missing out on major rites of passage - prom, spring fling, graduation.… so much is unknown with regard to timeframes. Empathize with them and listen. Allow them to be upset but encourage the, one day at a time approach!
13. Use caution not to project your financial fears onto the kids but also be age-appropriate when dealing with the reality. Try to keep conversation about money, away from the kids. That being said, it’s ok to let kids know that since you or a loved one is out of work or there are too many unknowns, extra expenses have to wait.
14. Do you work during the day? Leave a list of things your kids can do to soak up time: apply for scholarships, write a letter to someone, do something for an elderly family member, write down meal prep for the next few days. If possible, call and check in with your kids while you are at work.
15. Set up time when school work should be the focus and check to be sure it is getting done. Talk about your child’s grades and the assignments that they are receiving online. Design your child’s school time schedule with him/her or at least talk about it. Allow for flexibility. Your child might not do school work from 8:00-2:00; especially, if they are helping with a sibling during your workday but if the school work is quality and it is getting done, consider it a win!
16. Are you a nurse, medical responder or someone on the front lines? If so, first and foremost, THANK YOU. Second, it’s likely that your child is concerned about your risk. Ask if they are worried and talk about it.
17. Be cautious of rumors. Small towns can easily fall victim to rumors - perhaps your child has heard that someone in the district has tested positive for COVID-19. Check the CDC website and ground your conversation with facts. Emphasize the importance of squashing rumors.
18. Finally, for those struggling to make ends meet, don’t hesitate to ask for help:
• Are you behind on bills or fearful that you will be? Many if not most businesses are fielding these calls daily - you are NOT alone! Call the company in question and tell them what you can or can’t do for a payment. Even if you think you will be ok with paying bills for a bit, it’s ok to call and find out what your options are. Having this information on hand can help to alleviate stress that creeps in if the situation arises. Be proactive.
• If you are in need of food know that there are many wonderful area food cupboards. The Dover Foxcroft Food Cupboard has an informative Facebook page and recently posted the following info:
Food will be distributed on March 27, April 10 & 25, 10 - noon and 1-3. Recommendations from the CDC are being taken seriously, and the Food Cupboard is making adjustments. Food cupboard distributions will be very similar to commodity food distributions:
1. Food boxes will be assembled by volunteers, minimizing handling to the extent possible.
2. Patrons will remain in their vehicles, and volunteers will load their food.
3. First-time patrons will receive food boxes. Pre-registration is never required.
In closing, please know that we are thinking about you and our students. We miss them terribly and can't wait to get back to normal. We are here to support you and your child in any way that we can. Please email if there is something that you need and if we can't supply the answer we will work hard to find out who can. Please take care.

<p>DOVER-FOXCROFT -- Life has changed dramatically for families in the Piscataquis region, and around the globe.</p>
<p>“I get to get out of the house by myself, and that’s about as much celebrating as I’m doing today,” said Christi Pingree on April 2, her birthday, while picking up pre-ordered groceries. The couple, who will be married two years in June, have two children, Jarad Pingree’s son, Kieran, 9, and Christi’s daughter, Jelena, 9.</p>
<p>Pingree, a behavioral health professional, took a leave of absence when the school closed, even though she worries about her clients while she’s away. “My workplace is pretty understanding, and in my opinion, family comes first. I don’t want my kids shuffled around, especially at a scary time, an uncertain time. I want them to have stability, a strong routine. We do a whole school day and try to keep it as normal as possible,” she said.</p>
<p>Jelena enjoys being home schooled, but Kieran doesn’t like it as much and misses his friends, Pingree said. Finding materials hasn’t been an issue, as the school sends homework, coloring sheets, links to word searches and other educational games. Art projects are also available online. School begins right after breakfast.</p>
<p>“We do things in the same order every day,” said Pingree. “We knock out the hard stuff first, then go on to the easier things. If we can’t do recess, we do what I call movement – we put ‘Just Dance’ on the Wii to get all their wiggles out.”</p>
<p>Pingree said she “never aspired to be a homeschool or stay-at-home mom, and I was right! This is not for me. I only work when they are at school. I take them to the library once a week, and I’m at every sports thing, but I like to get out and work, and I like having my free days here and there, too.”</p>
<p><strong>Financial concerns and COVID fears</strong></p>
<p>Pingree was a little apprehensive when she took her leave of absence. Then they found out Jared would also not be working. Jarad just finished work as a background investigator. His new job, forensic analyst at the Maine State Police crime lab, is on hold.</p>
<p>“This is a little scarier because we don’t know how long this is going to go on for,” she said. “I don’t know if this will be a month or three months. I had heard with mortgage companies, if you needed to miss a payment or three, they would put it on the back end of the loan.” But when she called, she was told that they could take months off, but would owe back payments in addition to regular payments once they resumed.</p>
<p>Fortunately, the couple’s income tax refund arrived recently. “That was a load off,” Pingree said. “I felt like the timing was pretty darn good. I think we’ll be okay. We’ll be fine.”</p>
<p>Typically, Pingree shops at Sam’s Club and Walmart, supplementing with trips to Shaw’s and Will’s Shop n Save. Now, “I don’t want to go in anywhere. I pull in [at Walmart] and call and tell them I’m there, and they bring it out to the car. I don’t touch anything or talk to anyone. I wash my hands when I get home and I scrub everything down with antiseptic wipes, then I wash my hands again,” she said. Postage stamps are ordered online, as are photographs. Arrivals from Amazon get wiped down, too.</p>
<p>Pingree is also uncertain how safe takeout food might be. “Everyone decides how much risk they want to take. Everyone has their ideas, but to me, it’s just not worth it. I am perfectly capable of preparing our food. To me, better safe than sorry. That’s just my personality.” </p>
<p><strong>Mental health matters</strong></p>
<p>Talking to the kids about what’s going on can be tricky, Pingree said. “I don’t want to lie to them that it’s all sunshine and rainbows, but I don’t want to scare them, either. We tell them that everything is going to be okay, that we are doing everything we can to protect ourselves, and just following [recommendations] to keep ourselves healthy.”</p>
<p>Pingree, who works part time, misses having a few hours to herself while the kids are in school. “I really, really miss having time to myself one or twice a week,” she said. Fortunately, her husband helps her carve out a couple of hours to watch TV by herself, and she helps him find time for a nap once in a while. Jarad Pingree, a veteran, is missing pain management treatments normally received through a VA hospital in Boston.</p>
<p>Pingree said she misses attending church in person rather than via Facebook Live. And she misses dinners with her in-laws, who live nearby. “It’s been kind of weird and hard not to be able to do that. Yesterday, my mother-in-law put some masks in the mailbox, and waved through the window,” she said.</p>
<p>“I try to keep things as normal as possible,” Pingree said. “Other than that, we are just kind of winging it and doing our best like everyone else and hoping this thing will pass.”</p>
